If you’re in the market for a VPN, you may be looking to try out some of the best VPN providers available, especially because signing up for multiple years often gives the best value. In this article, we’ll go through how to get a free trial with NordVPN.

Previously, NordVPN offered a three-day trial for free. However, due to people abusing this opportunity, the VPN changed it to a 30-day money-back guarantee. NordVPN refers to this as a “risk-free trial,” but you will need to pay upfront and talk to customer service to request a refund.

Although it’s far from a free trial, there are benefits to this policy, such as having access to NordVPN’s worldwide bank of servers for a full month. There also isn’t much risk for you; we’ve never had a problem with getting our money back during the years of regularly updating our NordVPN review.

How to Get a Free Trial of NordVPN

To use this “free trial,” you will need to go to the purchase page on NordVPN’s website. Here, you can choose any of the four plans. The three-year option is the default, but a one-month plan is available if you don’t want to risk the full $125.

After you’ve selected your plan, you can put in an email address and payment information. There are various options for paying, including credit card and cryptocurrency, but you can’t use third-party systems like PayPal.

Payment_Options

After you’ve paid, you will receive an email with a link to choose an account password. There isn’t a secure password generator, so you’ll have to use a separate program to keep your account safe. We recommend that you look through our best password manager guide for our top choices.

Email

Another email will contain a link to download the VPN. Installing NordVPN is quick and easy, needing only for you to choose a download location and log in to your account. Now you can begin to use the full version, and your subscription will automatically renew if you decide not to get your money back.

Getting the NordVPN 30-Day “Free Trial”

  1. Go to NordVPN’s “purchase” page
  2. Choose your plan
  3. Enter an email and payment information
  4. Set an account password
  5. Download the VPN from either the email or the website
  6. Follow the installation instructions

Canceling NordVPN

We have a separate guide on how to cancel NordVPN and get a refund, but we’ll do a quick recap here, too.

At the end of the 30-day “trial,” you will need to contact customer support either by live chat or through email to receive your full refund. It took only a few minutes to reach someone on the support team, and we got our money back on the same day.

When opening the support page, NordVPN’s chatbot began asking us a series of questions, but nothing felt slow or repetitive. When we reached a person, they had all of this information, so the interaction was brief.

Chatbot

After we answered the standard question of why we were leaving, they confirmed we could receive a refund. We received our money within the day, although it could take up to 10 days for it to come through.

It may take time to cancel your account, so we recommend that you manually turn off the automatic renewal. You can do this on your online account page by selecting the three dots next to the “change plan” button and choosing the “cancel automatic payments” option.

How to Get a NordVPN Refund

  1. Contact the support team through the website
  2. Follow the instructions given by the chatbot
  3. Ask the customer support member to return your money
  4. Answer why you want a refund
  5. Cancel your automatic renewal

Final Thoughts

We got our refund from NordVPN quickly, and we didn’t need to jump through hoops, which is as good as any other VPN provider with a similar system. Even though we don’t think NordVPN is as good as ExpressVPN, it’s worth trying the service to see if it’s the best option for you (we also have a piece on how to cancel ExpressVPN).

It is worth mentioning that NordVPN was hacked in March 2018. However, it dealt with the vulnerability well, and we consider its security to still be among the best. With industry-standard encryption and features like an effective kill switch, it matches its top competitors, as you can read in our ExpressVPN vs NordVPN showdown.
